Buildings Services Practice

When considering graduate applications there was one company that stood out from the rest, and that was Arup.

I was initially drawn to Arup by the large high-profile projects such as the Beijing Water Cube, the ‘Birds-nest’ stadium and locally here in Australia the AAMI Park and of course, the Sydney Opera House. What I didn’t realize was the strong sense of social and environmental responsibility that was an intrinsic part of the Arup corporate culture. Being a multidisciplinary and global firm, Arup also provides the opportunity to travel through work either on short or long term assignments.

Since starting with Arup as a graduate Façade Engineer I’ve worked on a wide range of projects such as the Melbourne Olympic Park redevelopment, Zara Bourke Street Mall and Perth Airport. This has often involved working closely with other Arup groups such as structures, fire, acoustics and MEP which has really helped me gain a better appreciation of the entire project.

The Arup Graduate Development Program is run over the first two years of working at Arup and helps develop essential skills such as Writing Winning Documents and interpersonal skills (my favourite). These sessions are run by both internal and external people. These sessions have been invaluable in helping me develop my skills and capabilities when working on projects.

When I first started with Arup I was a worried about my ability to live up to expectations, but I quickly learned that you can never ask too many questions, and with over 10,000 ‘Arupians’ worldwide, the answer to any question is only a phone call away. I was surprised how willing people were to share their knowledge and experience; some of the most approachable people are the Senior Associates and Principles! I was overwhelmed by the support I was given.

The best part of Arup is the social aspect. There are regular events being held in and out of the office which everyone is always invited to. People in the office become more than just work colleagues, they become good friends too.
